Band Director & GuitarDr. Zachary Grim

My Story

As the Guitar & Band teacher for McLean’s Middle and Upper Schools, it is my goal to continue this lineage of wonderful teachers who open their students to the creativity and self-expression that music provides while guiding each student to maximize their artistic potential. I hold two bachelor’s degrees from West Chester University (Music Education & Music Performance) and a master’s degree from the University of Denver in Music Performance. I also hold a second master’s degree in Musicology and a doctorate in Music Performance, both from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Music is one of my greatest passions in life, and I have benefitted from enthusiastic teachers who inspired me to be a musician. Additionally, I am a concertizing musician and use my experience as a professional to guide our students in their individual paths to success.

A yearly favorite experience for my students would be our annual band trip. The Upper School goes to Virginia Beach and the Middle School takes a trip to Hershey Park. These trips are always a wonderful time of artistic growth and fun for our students.

When I am not teaching, you can usually find me on a long run or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen. Since I grew up in Pennsylvania, I am a very big Philadelphia sports fan and you can find me rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles every Sunday!

In addition to teaching music at McLean, I coach the Varsity Baseball and Cross Country teams!
