My Story

I am a proud member of the McLean faculty. In my role as Middle School ASL teacher, I work to introduce students to the Deaf community, Deaf culture, and the beautiful language that is ASL. I am also proud to be the director of the Middle School Theater Performances. Along with my colleague, Sierra Pearson, I look forward to expanding the minds of our young scholars through the wonders of theater. I possess an MA from Gallaudet University in ASL Linguistics and a BS in Biology and Chemistry from Bowie State University, as I thought I was going to Medical School! My favorite lesson is our “A Day at Gallaudet University” field trip. It is the milestone field trip for the ASL classes. Not only does it afford the students an opportunity to experience a voice-off day at the ASL mecca, but this field trip allows them to demonstrate their mastery of the language and maturity by respecting the sign-only culture of the campus. The trip culminates with a walk to the signing Starbucks, where the students have more hands-up, voice-off time as they order drinks in ASL and socialize with other customers and each other without using English.
