Aha! Moments

Aha! Moments

At McLean School, we talk a lot about transformation. Sometimes it occurs in one giant leap, and at other times it’s an accumulation of a series of small steps. It’s when reading goes from effort to enjoyment. When a lesson comes to life outside the classroom. The realization that asking for extra help or more time on a test is no big deal. Recognizing that you’re not alone, that you’re capable of more than you realize, that you have it in you, that you knew it all along, and that it’s okay even if you didn’t. “Aha! moments” take many forms–some are big, others small, and all add up to transforming the lives of our students and families. Hear from our teachers about some of these moments that made all the difference.

To witness that excitement, that pride, that realization that “yes, I can do it” is priceless. Students say “Senora, you were right, I do know more than what I think.”

Crystal Bobo

She felt so empowered realizing she could advocate for herself. “Wait! I can choose which type of seat I sit in?” Yes, yes you can.

My job is to give kids “Aha! moments.” And they’re more willing to have those “Aha! moments” with you when they know that they’re safe, and that you’re concerned about what they’re trying to achieve.

What makes that so rewarding for us, the teachers, is that we’re present far more often when the lightbulb goes off, we’ve actually got the time to take them to that point. In our small classrooms, being known leads to more knowing.

You see them in their seats laughing to themselves or wanting to get to the next page as fast as they can because they’re so interested in what they’re reading. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to teach literature and see those moments happen all the time.
